190 cc engine The 190 cc ReadyStart™, four-cycle Briggs & Stratton engine is manufactured to John Deere standards for quality and reliability. It has 7.0 lb-ft gross torque per SAE J1940. The engine is equipped with a zone-start recoil-rope starting system.

The carburetor is specifically designed to prevent flooding for easier starts—without priming or choking. A Fresh Start® fuel tank cap contains fuel stabilizer that drips into the fuel tank as the mower is operated, to ensure fresh fuel for quick starts at all times. Zone-start system requires the engine be started from behind the handlebar using the extended recoil rope while holding down the operator-presence control, also located on the handlebar. When the control is released, the engine and blade stop. High torque is provided for tough mowing conditions. Engine is designed to meet California Air Resources Board (CARB) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) air emission standards. A dependable splash lubrication system protects the engine's moving parts from wear. Briggs & Stratton, ReadyStart, and Fresh Start are U.S.-registered trademarks of Briggs & Stratton Corporation.

Stamped-steel deck The 22-in. steel deck is designed for optimum versatility and high performance whether side discharging, mulching, or bagging using the standard 3-in-1 blade. The deck is stamped from 14-gauge (0.074-in.) thick steel; it is strong for reliable performance and lightweight for easy handling.   The 3-in-1 blade provides outstanding cutting performance and is designed for use when mulching, when bagging, or for side-discharge applications. A rear bag, mulch cover, and side-discharge deflector are all included as standard equipment.

The design of the underside of the deck is clean, with minimal hardware, to allow free flow of clippings and minimal grass buildup.

The mower comes standard with a side-discharge deflector, mulch cover, and rear bag: Changing between modes is easy and can be done quickly as grass conditions or needs change. A 3-in-1 blade provides outstanding cutting performance and is designed for use in side-discharge, mulching, or bagging applications.

Rear discharge deflector (shown on 2009 JS45) Just flip up the mulch cover to install the rear-discharge deflector and distribute the grass clippings evenly over the lawn.

2-1/2-bu rear grass bag A durable and attractive black-fabric rear bag is standard on all models. It features a large 2-1/2-bu capacity for long intervals between emptying. A convenient handle allows easy installation and removal in seconds.
